In the far parking lots of the celebrated hotel, an uneasy negotiation convened within the confines of a barricade formed by the Maserati and two unmarked special police cruisers. It was late and humid and tempers ran hot.

Chief Yusuf Torres was irate. At everything and everyone and he let them hear it. Intelligence analyst Liya Al Ariani should never have been brought along, his superiors be damned. She had left her post, disobeyed direct orders—treasonous—and was too friendly with the American agents, who would be deported on the first plane possible. Or, if he had his way, handcuffed and deposited into the overcrowded Sweihan Prison.

What the hell was on that truck? Did they know conclusively? Could they be chasing an innocent moving van, helping college kids transfer luggage from the hotel to the college and back?

Analyst Liya, renowned for her insight into the extremist Muslim terror groups, had few answers. She claimed the American agents seemed to be cooperating with other entities, but she didn’t know who or where. Nor what brought them to the university.

Most of this was communicated in Arabic.

Worst for Yusuf, the American agents paid no heed to his fury. The woman remained focused on her phone, talking with Washington, and she’d even asked him to lower his voice, Allah yuafiquni. The man, Sinatra, kept his attention on the hotel tower. He said the American William Sloan was inside, an important and valuable man to Abu Dhabi.

That was the only reason Yusuf hadn’t arrested them yet—Mr. Sloan.

Yusuf was merely the chief of the special anti-terrorist unit, and already reprimanded for letting a rogue force kidnap Mr. Sloan. The Major General of the Abu Dhabi Police called Yusuf to accost him every few hours for letting this outrage go on, and so did the Minister of the Interior.

If agent Sinatra was correct about Mr. Sloan, his job might be saved.

If Sinatra was wrong, and Yusuf phoned to wake up his superiors this late for nothing, being fired was the least of his concerns.
